Birch Lane Library

Lynne Sundstrom - Teacher Librarian

Ms. Sundstrom

Welcome to the Birch Lane Library!

Our school has an extensive library program and we hope students will visit the library often. Each class has a weekly, regularly scheduled library time. Primary students take part in a rich, literature based program where they are exposed to some of the best new books, award winning books, and authors and illustrators. The intermediate grades meet weekly with a credentialed Teacher Librarian for an information literacy program consisting of internet skills, research strategies, and literature based projects. The library offers many reading incentive programs such as the California Young Reader Medal Program, Third Grade Battle of the Books, and the Intermediate Grades Battle of the Books. The library also hosts a Book Fair during fall and spring parent conference weeks.

DUE TO COVID 19, THE LIBRARY IS CURRENTLY NOT OPEN.  ALL LIBRARY CLASSES WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH DISTANCE LEARNING.  WE HOPE TO PROVIDE LIMITED BOOK CHECK OUTS DURING THE COMING WEEKS.

The library opens at 8:10 a.m. each morning and closes at 3:15 p.m., except on early dismissal days when it closes at 1:45 p.m.

Please be sure to stop by the library and happy reading! You can reach Lynne Sundstrom at [email protected]

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a favorite library activity for our 3rd – 6th graders. Teams read selected titles and then gather in the MPR to answer questions about each of the books. Parents are invited to serve as judges or support their student by reading the books with them. Third graders are introduced to the concept of Battle of the Books through their own Battle and the Intermediate students (4th, 5th, and 6th graders) battle together. Titles will be released in March 2021.

3rd grade Battle: TBD
Intermediate Battle: TBD

Scroll to the Editor of the New York Times

Birch Lane students, teachers, parents and community members sent a scroll to the New York Times in 2011 promoting our love of picture books.  This was in response to a NY Times article stating that picture books were no longer being read and enjoyed and were not popular anymore.  The publication of the Scroll prompted authors and illustrators around the world to stand with Birch Lane and the Facebook page, Thank You Birch Lane, was created by two illustrators, Lisa Kopelke and Matt Faulkner.  Since then, the page has been used to promote the enjoyment of picture books as well as the yearly Love a Picture Book Month.  Our 10th and final year theme was Reading is My Superpower.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Davis Joint Unified School District libraries is to foster a lifelong love and habit of reading, while promoting skills and literacy in the ethical and effective use of information and technology among all students. This is accomplished by the instruction of teacher librarians supported by technicians, who work collaboratively with faculty and staff and oversee the provision of a wide variety of print and electronic resources.
