Harvest Week and Scarecrow Breakfast
Posted on 10/14/2021

The mornings are getting cooler, which means….it is almost time for Harvest Week at Birch Lane Elementary! Harvest Week is an enhanced and updated version of our school’s autumn tradition, the Scarecrow Breakfast.

There will be a week of learning about the harvest season, apples, and bees as well as encouragement to nurture yourself in nature and arts & crafts involving — of course — the scarecrow!

Because we can’t yet gather and dine together how we’d like to, we have reimagined the Scarecrow Breakfast as a Scarecrow Snack for all students to enjoy the morning of Wednesday Oct. 27th!

Scarecrows are traditionally used to scare birds away from crops. At BLE, scarecrows will be used to create a fun and festive atmosphere during Harvest Week

Part of what made past Scarecrow Breakfasts so magical was the full-size scarecrows built by our school community on display in the quad. In order to keep that part of the tradition alive, please consider creating a scarecrow this year. We will be displaying them in the BLE Arboretum for our school community to enjoy throughout Harvest Week.

Here are the details on how your family and friends can join the scarecrow-making fun:

WHO: Individual families or groups of friends can work together to create a scarecrow. Every student who helps to create a scarecrow will get a special “Thank you” for their efforts in the form of a Yoloberry gift card.

WHAT: Scarecrows traditionally resemble the human form and wear clothing. However, be creative! If you can imagine it, we will love it!

WHERE: In the BLE Arboretum.

WHEN: Please drop off your family’s completed scarecrow on Sunday, Oct. 24th between 2-5PM at the Arboretum. You’ll get your Yoloberry gift card! There will be volunteers to help your family with placement. The scarecrows will be displayed until Friday, October 29th. Please pick up your scarecrow after 4PM on Friday.

HOW: There are multiple ways to make a scarecrow. Feel free to think outside the box!
